Frequently asked questions

Can your MoCA devices bridge 802.1q VLAN tagged packets?
Yes, our device can pass packets with VLAN tag.

Is it full duplex?
MoCA is TDD (Time Division Duplex). The 2.5 Gbps is shared by all the devices in the same network. The elected controller device manages the Tx/Rx time slot allocation.

Will these work in an existing MOCA 2.0 environments? Obviously would have update at least 2 ends of the splits but would other ends be required to have 2.5 or would older MOCA adapters work with these?
Per the MoCA specification, MoCA devices are backwards compatible but not forwards compatible. This means, if a MoCA 1.1 device is talking to a MoCA 2.0 device (or 2.0 <-> 2.5, etc.) then the speed drops down in both directions to what the 1.1 device can support. At the same time, if you have another pair of nodes on the same network that both support MoCA 2.0, then that pair will communicate at 2.0 speeds.

Does the admin GUI also allow configuring the MoCA frequency channel you want the extenders to run on?
Yes, our products can support this. Our device can support MoCA D-band low, D-band high and D-band extend three configurations. By default, we enable all of them. It will setup a 5-channels connection, from 1125MHz to 1625MHz. We know that, many MSO use D-band low 1125MHz to 1225MHz to act as MoCA WAN. You can change our device to use D-band high only, from 1350MHz to 1675MHz, can build a 3-channels connection.

Does MoCA work with any network access technology?
Yes. MoCA technology works with any network access technology including fiber (GPON/EPON), DOCSIS, Ethernet and MoCA Access

Is your product MoCA certified by the MoCA Certification Board ?
Not yet. Now only Maxlinear is making MoCA2.5 chip. Their reference board has passed MoCA 2.5 certification. Our product is based on their MoCA 2.5 chip, MxL3710. So we don’t need to do the certification again.

Does your MoCA adapter includes a filter inside the device already, such that connecting Modem/TV/etc to the second (marked TV) coaxial connector of the device will filter out MoCA frequencies?
Yes, our adapter has two internal band pass filters. One is for MoCA, between the MoCA chip and MoCA RF port. The frequency range is 1125 to 1675 MHz. Another is for TV, between MoCA RF port and the TV RF port. The frequency range is 5 to 1002 MHz

The admin / config page will not load at all, page just times out.
You need to set your IP address manually to 192.168.144.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 because the adapter does not have DHCP server. Set your IP manually and the web admin page will load. The default IP of the device is 192.168.144.200. username is admin, password is maxlinear. You can change the default password as you want.

Couple of quick questions around the firmware on the adapters: 1,Do you plan on issuing firmware updates? 2,How would I know they are available? 3,What level of support do you plan on providing for the adapters specifically for firmware or other types of updates?
1, Yes, If chip vendor updates SDK, I will release a new firmware based the new SDK.
2, We will put the new firmware onto our website, and send notifications to all the customers.
3, We will try our best to provide technical support to our customers, definitely the firmware upgrading will be included.

What is MoCA technology?
MoCA technology is a layer 2 transport protocol enabling the distribution of content over the existing in-home coaxial TV cabling. The primary job of MoCA technology is to guarantee delivery of packets to their destination.

What problem does MoCA technology solve and how does it make the home network better?
MoCA technology is used as an in-home backbone to guarantee wireless connectivity. As consumers bring more devices into the home all yearning for bandwidth a wire is required to guarantee the wireless network. Though Wi-Fi has improved dramatically over the years, live content streaming, gaming, virtual reality and UHD format programming all strain even the most robust wireless network.
As a result of its high performance and reliability, and the support it provides for wireless networks, MoCA technology lowers the cost of managing the entire network, or total cost of ownership. This is important for both operators and consumers as guaranteeing the performance of the network and delivery of content reduces the need to continuously upgrade equipment and eliminates downtime from a non-performing network.
For operators, a well-performing network is especially important. Customer complaints means they are experiencing a non-functioning network and are not receiving services for which they have paid. The operator is then obligated to send a technician to fix the problem. The extra visits and associated time adds to the overall cost of network management. Integrating MoCA technology into the network reduces operational costs as delivery of services is guaranteed and additional repairs and customer complaints are eliminated.
For consumers, a well-functioning network also eliminates the downtime that accrues from inability to access the Internet.

What are some of the alternative technologies and mediums available for home networking?
Large houses, MDU environments, thick building materials, and the nature of the in-home wiring can all affect the performance and satisfaction level of a home network.
Wi-Fi® technology is a shared medium so the more devices on the network, the less bandwidth available. A Wi-Fi-based network may not reach every room in the home, and signals will not go through walls. It is also prone to interference with a neighbor’s network.
Products using power line technology are easy to use and outlets are found in every room. Power line is also prone interference from everyday household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens and DECT phones. It is not an ideal medium for HD or ultra HD content distribution and it can be affected by condition and age of the wiring.
Ethernet (Cat5/6) are viable options and provide the performance and reliability of MoCA. However, Ethernet is not pre-installed in every home like coax, and every time there is an upgrade to the specification, a new category of wiring is required.
Unlike MoCA, which is a no new wires technology, Ethernet is a new wire every time.
When designing a home networking, products integrating both Wi-Fi and MoCA technology should be considered for maximum performance and satisfaction.

What is the bandwidth for simultaneous up/down transmission?
One network can has maximum 16 devices. All the devices share the 2.5G bandwidth, transfer traffic among them. So it is difficult to say up/down transmission.

Does MoCA technology work on any type of coax?
Yes. If you can receive a TV signal, you can get MoCA

How fast can MoCA go?
MoCA 2.5 offers actual data rates of up to 2.5 Gbps. It is backward interoperable with MoCA 2.0 and MoCA 1.1.
MoCA 2.0 is capable of up to 1 Gbps actual data rates.
